Personal History
Born in Fresno, California, Jon grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His mother was an educator; his father, one of the original chief Information officers. (A holiday wreath in Jon’s home was once created out of IBM punch cards, spray-painted gold.) He and his wife Lisa moved to the West Coast for Jon’s pursuit of a graduate degree, driving a U-Haul truck cross-country.
Interesting fact: Jon paid for his Indiana University tuition as a part-time staffer in the University’s sports information (communications and PR) office. There he worked for Hall of Fame Sports Information Director Tom Miller, and had first-hand interactions with Hall of Fame coaches Bobby Knight (basketball), Lee Corso (football, and later, ESPN fame), Sam Bell (track and field), and Jerry Yeagley (soccer.) Jon and Lisa met in the press box of Indiana’s football stadium. In Oregon, Jon and Lisa worked as statisticians for UO athletics (football, basketball, and track and field) in Oregon’s pre-Nike days, and today count themselves as loyal Ducks.
